Bad Salzuflen. (bre) Have you said goodbye yet? Have you already shelved your ideas for modern shopfitting? No? Why not? Stationary retail is dying. And investing in store fitting is a waste. At least, this is how it has been repeated over and over again in all media for some time now. Shoppers now only shop online. Everything is going digital. Or?

How does that feel to you as a shopfitter? They are sure to have creative approaches and ideas for tomorrow’s store fixtures. The challenge facing the entire shopfitting industry is to bring classic shopfitting into the digital age.

The digital world is omnipresent. Just quickly order a new sneaker — I can put together the design online and if I order today, the sneaker will be with me tomorrow. I can also quickly add pizza and after-work beer to my shopping cart with a single click. Simply pay by PayPal or credit card and delivery can perhaps even be set for a specific time. What does this mean for stationary retail and thus for shopfitting?

Touch and try…

One thing is certain: The market share of online retailing has grown rapidly in recent years. But does that mean the end for brick-and-mortar retail? Will shopping transform completely? No! It is true that shopping behavior has changed and will continue to change. But according to a Statista survey, 86% of customers rate the opportunity to sample products in person by touching or trying them out as the greatest advantage of stationary retail. Personal consulting is a close second. This is the opportunity that brick-and-mortar retailers can and should seize. Especially you shopfitting experts will agree.

The stage for products!

Haptics, visual stimuli and personal advice are the driving arguments that draw customers into stores. 84% of customers aged 18–64 say they prefer to buy groceries in stores. For clothing and footwear, the figure is still 45%. The survey makes it clear that not every purchase is replaced by online offers. Food can be checked for freshness and appearance. Taking the cold Coke from the shelf and perhaps spontaneously deciding to also try another variety because it just feels so good can only be driven by animation of the senses. Or feel the leather of the bag and check the seams for quality, works only directly on the object. For shopfitting and retail, however, this also means: higher demands in store design. Products must be presented in such a way that they can be found. If the
Product presentation
appealing, customers may reach for it two or three times. With the right presentation solutions, this turns any shelf into a real
Stage
for every product. In the best case, products sell so well that shelves need to be replenished quickly. The Shelf in this case provides the presentation area. But it is also possible to turn the classic into a modern information tool with the help of digital sensor technology.

Pretty smart.…

This information tool, the so-called
Smart Shelf
, is the link between the analog and the digital world. Any classic shelf can become a Smart Shelf. Prerequisite is the equipment with POS TUNING product feeders. In addition, sensors, the so-called beacons, from
neoalto
. The feeds “piggyback” on the sensors. With every movement of goods on the shelf, the performance of product placement can now be measured live. The data collected ends up in a cloud and can be queried from anywhere in real time. This makes it possible to monitor and optimize merchandise availability for customers or lost sales, planogram quality and also multiple placement in the market. How does my product perform? Where might something need to be changed in the placement? Which variety do customers like best? The shelf can answer all these questions and offers you as a store builder extensive arguments for bringing the Smart Shelf to retail.

Linking traditional on-site shopping with the digital world and turning it into an experience sounds like a challenge at first. But it only takes a few things to achieve these goals.

Shelf automation: This not only saves time and labor. It also makes for happier customers and more sales

More space for optimal Product presentation offer: Even small changes to the appearance of the shelf can lead to more attention

Linking digital and analog elements: This allows a myriad of information to be drawn from the shelf space, providing information on elementary building blocks for success. With this information, brick-and-mortar retail can keep up with online retail.

Take the chance to create a small experience landscape out of every store design that turns customers into fans.

No online retailer in the world can do that!

Shopping should be an experience. Many customers combine their shopping with a varied excursion. The emphasis here is on variety. The presentation of products should be characterized by inspiration. It is no longer enough to simply put the shoes or the cans on the shelf and hope that customers will already take the products. This is also no longer the optimum for retailers. Combining digital approaches with intelligently used analog presentation opens up new opportunities for customers and retailers. This allows sales figures to be analyzed and optimized more precisely, customer sales behavior to be monitored, and purchasing processes to be steered in the right direction. And this works with the classic shelf! Only the classic shelf provides the stage for the products customers need to touch and try. No online retailer in the world can do that. And this is where the hour strikes for you as a store fitting expert: Thinking about shopfitting is not yesterday’s news! Intelligent presentation solutions, can turn any shelf or store furniture into a digital treasure trove of knowledge. Now the present can be linked with the future and this only works hand in hand with shopfitting.

Bad Salzuflen. (bre) If it were possible to choose a buzzword for 2022, the word “supply bottleneck” would probably be at the top of the list. Whether it’s raw materials of any kind, foodstuffs or materials from various industries — everything is in short supply and delivery times for some goods are delayed by up to months. First the pandemic — then the war in Ukraine — the circumstances under which companies have to produce and make delivery forecasts have not been as unpredictable for a long time as they are now.

Months of delivery time

In a survey conducted by DZ Bank in April, around 77 percent of medium-sized companies in Germany said they were experiencing supply bottlenecks at the time of the survey. Medium-sized companies were the most frequently affected. Here, the figure was as high as 88 percent.

Anyone currently looking to purchase a new bike or game console should have a long thread of patience. For these products, customers sometimes have to be prepared for delivery times of several weeks or even months.

These problems can be attributed, among other things, to factory closures in Asia or reduced freight capacity in the shipping industry. Shortages of raw materials and precursors lead to delays in the delivery of end products. Globalization as a blessing and a curse?

More difficult general conditions

For years, production abroad has offered itself as the perfect alternative solution for many companies. More difficult framework conditions in Germany and a lack of skilled workers versus reduced cost burdens and sufficient personnel are the driving arguments for companies to focus on manufacturing abroad. In order to be competitive and not to deteriorate economically in comparison with other companies, Germany has lost some of its attractiveness as an industrial location in recent years. So why should a company buck the trend and opt for domestic production?

Dr. Brian Corley, Operations Manager at POS TUNING, has an answer: “POS TUNING has its roots here in East-Westphalia-Lippe. We not only have many well-trained specialists in the region, but also the necessary capacities to hold our own in the market. The industrial location of Lippe is extremely attractive, because the diversity of the corporate landscape is also the engine for innovation at the same time.”

With the decision to produce the meanwhile more than 2600 different articles exclusively on site in Lippe, POS TUNING makes itself largely independent of foreign countries. Products can still be delivered to customers on time. The high quality standard is therefore not in conflict with the production conditions. “We remain, despite the current difficult circumstances, a reliable supplier for our customers. This is a real challenge in the current economic crisis, but we also only ever promise what we can deliver,” explains Brian Corley.

Standard items are usually available immediately from stock. For customized products, delivery could take 6 to 8 weeks, he said. However, there would also be framework supply agreements with major customers that could run for several years.

The shortage of skilled workers, especially in the technical field, is also becoming increasingly serious. What is the company doing to meet these challenges?

“We are permanently expanding our network of suitable raw material suppliers and are increasingly focusing on renewable, bio-based and recyclable raw materials. We train within the company itself and offer skilled and semi-skilled employees a wide range of internal and external training opportunities.” Thinking and acting with an eye to the future is the basis for the company’s success.
Bad Salzuflen (bre). Since spring 2020, we all have to deal with a new normality. Masks, disinfection, distance and many other new realities have changed our everyday life and the way we think and act.

This has become particularly visible in retail. Spacers in the form of stickers, flutter tapes or prescribed walkways are supposed to provide more safety. Maintaining the distance in the highly frequented checkout area is a particular challenge. In most cases, there is only a lack of hygiene protection for staff and customers at the checkout counters. In this zone of the store, however, proximity to the customer is also unavoidable, as the products have to be placed on the checkout belt by the customer and the employee has to pull the products over the scanner.

Employees and customers have almost the same demands and wishes when it comes to safety. They want to be in a protected environment both when working at their workplace and when shopping.

What do customers think?

According to the POS Marketing Report 2021 from the “Rundschau”, for 55% of customers the implementation of Corona hygiene rules is an important criterion when choosing a shopping location. And this survey result is no surprise. The partly makeshift “protective guards” with wooden slats and tacked-on plastic sheets not only look uninviting, but also do not inspire confidence. Apart from their usefulness. A customer is more likely to prefer a market where he has the feeling that the protective measures apparently offer him more security.

What applies to employees in the retail trade?

According to the Covid regulations, employees in the checkout area are exempt from the obligation to wear masks. However, without the use of sneeze guards, they are exposed to the same high risk of infection as their colleagues. The employer must ensure the protection of his employees. According to the 23rd Covid Order of 15th December 2020, this results in an obligation for all persons in workplaces and establishments (…) to wear a mask covering their mouth and nose. For the retail sector, this means:

””(…) The employees at the cash registers themselves are at their (concrete) workplace and are therefore not affected by the mask obligation (no traffic area). In this area, however, it is part of the employer’s duty of care to ensure that employees are protected (for example, by means of separating screens or other suitable measures). This is accordingly transferable to other workplaces and business premises.”

So what to do?

“The variety of checkout counters and their respective shapes and designs is large. So the challenge is to develop a protection concept that can be applied to every checkout counter in retail,” explains Oliver Voßhenrich, managing partner of POS TUNING. According to recent studies, 58% of shoppers expect hygiene standards to be maintained in checkout areas as well. Oliver Voßhenrich describes the innovative idea of the Bad Salzufl-based company as follows: “We have developed a kind of flexible modular system that allows us to adapt and install hygienic sneeze guards to any type of checkout counter in just a few simple steps.” This system is made of recyclable PETG and features, among other things, high transparency and break resistance. All parts can be mounted directly on the checkout counter and are adaptable on site. “We thus offer our customers 360° all-round protection, because the basic package with front and pack protection can be extended at any time with the back and door protection,” explains Oliver Voßhenrich.

What does the future hold?

Although it is hard to imagine at the moment, there will be a time after the pandemic. What will it look like? How will our thinking and actions change? Oliver Voßhenrich explains: “Our shopping behaviour is already no longer the same as before the pandemic. The demands in the retail sector in terms of hygiene standards have increased. Shoppers want to feel safe when shopping and, above all, understood by the retailer. He must know what moves his customers. This also includes the fears that shoppers have. Of course, shopping should still be fun and not become an excursion into the unknown. The “feel-good zone” has been expanded to include the “safety zone”. This is where new thinking has to start.” In a survey for the EHI whitepaper “Handel mit Abstand”, 57% of shoppers were in favour of keeping the use of hygienic guards at checkouts even after the pandemic. Hygienic sneeze guards for checkout counters are a piece of the puzzle in the new daily routine — they can give employees and shoppers alike a sense of security. But that’s not all: according to BGHW, the hygienic sneeze guards from POS TUNING also meet the requirements for the retail trade. An investment in the future and in a new, different everyday shopping life.

Bad Salzuflen/Biemsen-Ahmsen. The retail push feed experts have retooled and expanded their production in the Corona pandemic. The demand for a secure job for cashiers is high throughout Germany. Production has been strengthened by 90 temporary workers to 190 heads.

Thomas Reineke, Lippische Landeszeitung

Corona has turned the world upside down. Also the processes and production in many companies. A good example is POS TUNING in the Meerbrede industrial estate. Since May last year, the specialist for push feed systems has been producing enclosures for cash registers in the retail trade — with success. “By the end of April we will have sold around 15,000 hygienic sneeze guards across Germany,” says managing director Oliver Voßhenrich.

Ideas exchange:

At the beginning of the Corona pandemic in spring last year, there were internal consultations at POS TUNING: “We asked ourselves in the team what our most important partner, the food retail trade, needed in order to protect both employees and customers from the risk of infection,” says Oliver Voßhenrich. The result was, among other things, face shields, spit guards, hygienic protective walls and, most recently, entire checkout enclosures. POS TUNING first supplied the city of Bad Salzuflen, among others, with protective walls — and subsequently also lawyers and doctors’ offices.

The problem was material procurement:

Demand rose quickly, and so a new problem arose for the company founded by Udo Voßhenrich in 1998:” We initially relied on plexiglass. But the demand for the transparent material increased so much due to Corona that it became far too expensive and in some cases could no longer be obtained at all,” recalls Oliver Voßhenrich.

PETG as the solution:

And again, good advice was expensive: “We then came up with the material PETG, and that was the key.” PET or polyethylene terephthalate is a plastic resin. Consumers know it in particular through the so-called PET bottles. PETG is a further development. It is clearer than PET, virtually as transparent as glass. “In addition, we were able to improve the structural rigidity of the material for our purposes, yet it is only three millimetres thick,” says Voßhenrich. This material forms the “walls” of the checkout enclosures. PETG is recyclable. It ends up being shredded back into granules, from which new plastic material can be moulded.

Customised solutions:

“We have developed a kind of modular system with which we can plan the right construction for practically any situation,” says Voßhenrich. Because: the checkout areas are fundamentally different from grocery chain to grocery chain, sometimes even from branch to branch of one brand.

Complete service:

It was also quickly clear to those responsible at POS TUNING that they could not leave the customers alone with the construction of the checkout enclosures. “We therefore offer a full service,” says Oliver Voßhenrich. This means that the Bad Salzufler company currently sends 130 two-person teams all over Germany at the same time to bring the ordered enclosures to the stores and set them up “ready to go” on site. POS TUNING gets the additional staff for this from service providers. “It would be impossible for us to build up so many staff so quickly ourselves,” says the managing director. The staff of the service providers are trained in Bad Salzuflen and then the packed goods are sent to all corners of the world.

Digitalisation in retail

POS TUNING was founded 23 years ago by Udo Voßhenrich, the father of managing partner Oliver Voßhenrich. The internationally positioned company with its 180 employees generates an annual turnover of around 30 million euros. “We are currently looking for further reinforcement”, says Oliver Voßhenrich. POS TUNING is a specialist for feed systems that always move the goods to the front of the shelf at the “point of sale” (the place where the customer’s decision to buy is made). This makes even a half-empty shelf look full. The experts from the Meerbrede industrial estate on the A2 are also in the process of digitalising retail. Modern feed systems from POS TUNING record the stock of goods and report it in an app, for example. Fully automatic reorders are also possible.

Next big order:

Despite this enormous effort, the set-up in the stores remains the “bottleneck” in the entire value chain, according to Oliver Voßhenrich. Because: “If a team is good, it might manage three, at most four markets a day.” And demand remains high. POS TUNING recently received a large order from a food chain. Voßhenrich does not want to reveal the name. “We were asked to do so by the customer,” explains the managing director.

Production strengthened:

But POS TUNING has not only had to increase its logistics, but also its production because of the new line of business. The production in Meerbrede has been reinforced by 90 temporary workers to 190 heads. Voßhenrich has solved another problem among Salzufl entrepreneurs. “The packed goods were almost bursting out of our company. That’s when I asked Andreas Reibchen from the exhibition centre if he could provide us with temporary hall capacity.” No question for Reibchen. So POS TUNING can currently use 1000 square metres of space in exhibition hall 20 for picking the material for the cash register enclosures. From there, the boxes go on their journey to the markets. The rental contract is valid until mid-April for the time being.

Working without a mask:

When the trade fair business starts up again, Oliver Voßhenrich may have to think about another solution. In any case, he does not assume that the need for hygiene measures everywhere where there is a lot of public and customer traffic will be resolved when the pandemic hopefully subsides soon. “People have been sensitised by Corona. An employee at the checkout will want to protect himself or herself from viruses and germs in the future as well. The big advantage of the enclosures is that the staff inside don’t have to wear a mask. We have had this clarified by professional associations,” says Voßhenrich. So it is quite possible that the new business segment POS TUNING will be maintained in the long run. (Rei)

Bad Salzuflen, 19.03.2021. It’s quite strange: some products are real bestsellers — they have hardly arrived on the shelves and are already sold out again. Another product, on the other hand, remains almost unnoticed and is hardly seen by the customer. What is the reason for this? Is it the product — the brand — that is decisive for whether the impulse to buy takes place or is it the design of the packaging or something else entirely?

The market research company POS Pulse got to the bottom of the question of product perception and found some astonishing and exciting results. A so-called product check was carried out via the Streetspotr app. The categories examined were soft drinks, sweets, body care, crisps and snacks.

All the results have one thing in common: across all the categories surveyed, eye-catching packaging was the main reason for consciously noticing the brand or product. The eye-catching designs of the well-known labels achieve such visual strength that the customer, almost without thinking, simply reaches for it. For soft drinks, almost 50% of respondents said that the packaging is the most noticeable. The figures for the other categories are similar (confectionery 32.65%, drugstore 41.67% and snacks 40.82%).

Of course, brand awareness is also an important aspect. Especially in confectionery, customers are brand loyal and connected to the product. The market leaders from Mondelēz, Ferrero and Lindt are the eye-catchers on the shelf. Supported, also by strikingly designed advertising displays, the market presence is underlined again and again. More than 20% of respondents consciously notice these displays and cite them as the reason why they noticed the brand.

The analysis of the perception in the different shelf zones is really exciting. Interesting results can be read in the so-called bend, reach, stretch and view zones. In the categories soft drinks and chips/snacks, 8.16% of the respondents say that the placement in the grip zone is a reason for brand perception. For drugstore products, it is even almost 13 %.

So what does this mean for retailers?

One thing is certain: design and brand awareness are impulse generators in the purchase decision. But: as before, this study underlines that people can only buy what they see. If you look at the different figures in the individual shelf zones, it becomes clear that the placement of the products on the shelf plays a decisive role in product perception.

In order to better understand the figures, it is important to become familiar once again with the individual shelf zones:

The stretching zone is located in the upper area of a shelf and starts at 170cm. Here, it is sometimes difficult to reach products even for taller people. The viewing zone is located at a height between 120cm and 170cm. Customers of normal height can easily see the products presented here because they are almost at eye level. The grip zone is located at a height of between 80 cm and 120 cm. Here, products can still be easily recognised and grasped. In the bending zone, things become more difficult. At a height of partly less than 80 cm, the customer may even have to kneel or crouch down to reach the product.

If we now look at the values in the individual categories, we see that products located in the stoop zone are hardly noticed or not noticed at all. The values are below 5% in all the categories asked about. The same applies to the so-called stretching zone. There, too, the perception is below 5%. If a product is placed in the grip zone, the perception increases again (12.50% in the body care category, over 8% for soft drinks, crisps and snacks).

What does this mean for the placement of products on the shelf?

Reck and stoop zones cannot remain empty. The solution is simple. Visibility can be improved, especially in these shelf zones, with push feed systems. If products that are already difficult to reach in the stretching and bending zones are always presented at the front of the shelf through the use of feed systems, the visibility and thus also the perception of the brand is increased. The use of shelf automation not only increases brand perception, but also sales. Customers can visually grasp a brand or product in a few seconds and decide whether to buy it or not. But they must be able to see the product and, in the best case, reach it effortlessly. If the products are at the back of the shelf zones, the customer cannot reach them. Thus, the purchase decision is aborted at this point at the latest. The retailer can present every product in every shelf zone at the front of the shelf by using push feed systems. This way, even the customer-unfriendly shelf levels become a stage for all products.
